The Opportunity & Role ContextTo support and enable our growth plans in India, we are seeking an experienced and versatile Senior HR Professional / HR Business Partner. This is a critical role responsible for establishing, managing, and scaling the HR function within our Indian subsidiary, starting from a relatively small operational base.Crucially, candidates should understand this is not a typical HR Business Partner role found in a large, established multinational corporation. While strategic alignment is key, the immediate and primary focus requires a very hands-on, pragmatic approach. The successful candidate will be responsible for the full spectrum of HR duties directly.Furthermore, the role demands a strong ability to effectively navigate and balance expectations across different organizational cultures – the local Indian context, the German HQ perspective, and regional APAC directives originating from China (functional reporting line). This requires significant cultural sensitivity and communication skills.3. Key Responsibilities
- HR Foundation Building & Development: Design, establish, and refine HR processes, systems, and policies tailored for the Indian entity, ensuring alignment with global/regional standards and local compliance. Develop the HR structure pragmatically based on current needs and near-term growth.
- Hands-On HR Operations & Administration: Directly manage all core HR operational activities including accurate employee record-keeping, onboarding/offboarding, payroll coordination (overseeing external provider), benefits administration, compliance reporting, and managing employee documentation. This will be a significant part of the role.
- Talent Acquisition Partnership: Collaborate closely with internal recruitment resources and manage relationships with external search partners for local hiring. Participate actively in interviews and ensure a smooth onboarding experience.
- Employee Relations & Engagement: Act as the first point of contact for employee queries and concerns. Foster a positive work environment. Manage employee relations issues effectively and ensure compliance with Indian labor laws. Champion company culture initiatives locally.
- Performance Management: Implement and manage the company's performance review cycle in India, providing coaching and support to managers and employees.
- Policy Implementation & Compliance: Interpret and implement global/regional HR policies within the Indian legal framework. Ensure full compliance with all relevant labor laws.
- Compensation & Benefits Support: Assist in administering local C&B programs, ensuring competitiveness and alignment with regional/global frameworks.
4. Ideal Candidate Profile
- Experience:
- Must Have: 10+ years of progressive HR experience, with significant time spent in a hands-on operational HR role within a multinational company environment in India.
- Critically Important: Demonstrable experience working within or closely collaborating with both European (ideally German) and Chinese business cultures/companies.
- Must Have: Proven experience across the full HR generalist spectrum.
- Highly Preferred: Experience in building or significantly scaling HR processes/functions in India, ideally within a small-to-medium sized subsidiary.
- Industry Preference: Experience within Biotechnology, Pharmaceutical, Life Sciences, or possibly Technology/R&D-focused multinational companies.
- Experience working abroad (outside India) is a distinct plus.
- Mindset & Approach:
- Essential: A pragmatic, "roll-up-your-sleeves" attitude. Must be willing and motivated to manage day-to-day HR tasks directly and build processes from the ground up.
- Essential: While we seek a seasoned professional, this role is best suited for someone energized by the building phase in a smaller entity, rather than someone seeking a purely strategic or large-team management role at this current scale. Strategic capability is valued for future growth, but operational execution is key now.
- Knowledge & Skills:
- Must Have: Strong, practical understanding of Indian labor laws and statutory compliance.
- Must Have: Proficiency in HRIS platforms (specifically SAP SuccessFactors) and MS Office Suite.
- Must Have: Excellent communication, interpersonal, and influencing skills. Fluent in English.
- Must Have: Strong problem-solving skills, high accuracy, and detail-orientation.
- Must Have: Ability to operate independently, manage ambiguity, and thrive in a dynamic environment.
- Education:
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field.
- A post-graduate degree/diploma in HR Management is a plus, but not required.
- Languages:
- Fluency in English (written and spoken) is essential.
- Proficiency in Hindi and/or other relevant regional Indian languages is a significant advantage.
- Cultural Fit / Soft Skills:
- Essential: Highly culturally astute, demonstrating a deep understanding of cultural specificities (e.g., differing concepts of hierarchy, risk-taking, compliance approaches) and communication styles between India, Germany (HQ), and China (APAC). Proven ability to effectively bridge these differences.
- Proactive, adaptable, resilient, and solutions-oriented.
- High ethical standards and integrity.
- Collaborative team player comfortable working across time zones.
